The CALCUTTA PARSEE CLUB was established on 4th November 1908 as a Cricket Club by five Parsee stalwarts of those days. Over the years, the Club expanded, not only in the size of its tent, but also in the number of its members and in its sporting disciplines.
The first Club tent was erected in 1908 on the Maidan, south of the present Mohammedan Sporting Club and was shifted three times thereafter to different locations on the Maidan till it ended up at its present site on P-49 Guru Nanak Sarani (Mayo Road) in 1922. In 1974, the tent was last expanded on reconstruction and is now one of the largest on the Maidan, boasting of Tennis Courts which few others have.
The Club, which started as a cricket club, continued as such for quite some time. In due course, the sporting activities were extended to football, hockey, tennis, basketball, badminton, table tennis and athletics.
The Club’s membership now stands at over 700 and includes a number of outstation members, both in and outside India.
Initially, membership was restricted to males, but in 1932 ladies were admitted and it is they who have really done the Club proud - 14 of them have represented West Bengal in Basketball, as players including captains (some of them on 3 or 4 occasions), 7 in Hockey, 2 in Cricket and 5 as Managers, while 3 have even represented India, one in three different sports - basketball, cricket and hockey - which is an unique distinction seldom equalled anywhere else in the world; moreover 3 of the lady members have won a multitude of gold, silver and bronze medals, both in the National and World Veterans Athletic Championships. The male members have also shone in representing the State in Cricket, Table Tennis and Tennis and 3 have the distinction of representing the Nation in Cricket, Rowing and Rugby; one very senior member has distinguished himself in the field of Veterans Athletics by winning gold, silver and bronze medals in National and International Championships.
One of the unique features of the Club is the nominal monthly membership fees which give all members of the community an opportunity to participate in sports and athletics.
The Club is also the centre for many social activities including community dinners, get-togethers and entertainment programmes open to all members of the community. It is the only place in Kolkata where Parsees, young and old, meet and pass pleasant evenings in the company of their friends.
The Club completed its centenary in 2008, held a series of functions that culminated in the release of a Centenary Souvenir, a few years later.
