DICKOO NOWROJI

This edition of the Gavashnifeatures DickooNowroji, a person who has made a significant contribution to the business and social canvas of Kolkata.

Born in Jamshedpur to Nariman and Phreny, and named Meher at birth, Dickoo was ‘home schooled’ at the Kindergarten run by her mother. She was then sent to Loreto Convent, Darjeeling at the age of six to continue with her studies. It was while filling her Senior Cambridge forms that she unwittingly changed her name from Meher to Dickoo, her pet name, by which she was known and identified by all.

Dickoo moved to Kolkata to Loreto College to graduate in English and then plunged into a career of Advertising and Marketing. She started as a trainee with Clarion McCaan and then moved on to Mumbai. However she returned after a year due to her father’s declining health and has since remained here.

It was in 1974 that Dickoo joined ITC and had a long career of thirty three years with them. Her assignments ranged from advertising and marketing to Promotions of events. She was the spearhead for the Wills ’Made for Each Other’ Contest and the Wills Books, and Videos, of Excellence. She was deeply involved with the Wills sponsorship of Cricket during the Test series and the World Cup. Dickoo finally retired from ITC as the Brand Manager of Wills and other international brands.

On a parallel level, Dickoo has been involved with Western music to a great extent. Her interest was fuelled by her father’s passion for western classical music and then further strengthened when she learned to play the piano in school. This interest has kept her actively involved with the Calcutta School of Music, India’s oldest music school, for decades. Dickoo has been its President from 1996 to date, successfully guiding the school of over a thousand pupils and organizing events of international colour to celebrate its centenary.

Books, and reading, are yet another passion for Dickoo. She enjoys both fiction and non-fiction and, of late, prefers historical novels. She also enjoys writing and intends to print her work someday.

To keep physically, as well as mentally, active Dickoo swims regularly and enjoys playing golf, which she has taken up more seriously post retirement.

Dickoo’s father was from a family who owned coffee plantations in Mangalore while her mother’s family was involved with Mahatma Gandhi in the struggle for India’s Independence. So was it Destiny or sheer circumstance that made them come to Kolkata? Whatever it may be, Kolkata has been home for Dickoo for nearly fifty years now and a city she truly identifies with.
