5-a-side Football Tournament Kick-off

22nd March witnessed the launch of the biggest event in Calcutta Parsee Club’s calendar – the increasingly popular annual 5-a-side Football tournament which, this year, will run from 22 March to 19 April.

Over the past four or five years, the tournament has witnessed a steady increase in popularity and participation. With a then ‘record’ 40 teams participating in 2011, this year’s edition has as many as 69 teams, our highest number ever.

The tournament itself is split into two sections, one for Corporates and the other for Clubs. The latter is essentially open to any group of players wishing to get together and form a team. This year, we have 25 companies and 44 clubs.

Exhibition games will be held during the duration of the tournament. These will feature national and international players. The tournament proper will also feature superstars AlvitoD’Cunha, Anit Ghosh and Tyson Caiado.

This year, for the first time, we are proud to welcome our first ever international team. Bando Design, from Bangladesh, will be participating in the corporate tournament. We welcome them to India, and wish them well.

CPC has put up two teams this year: CPC Blue (Jahan Mehta, Khurshed Bulsara, Ramin Balsara, Ratan Postwalla, Rayomand Subawalla, Rayzad Bulsara (c), Yohan Confectioner) and CPC Red (Arvaan Mogrelia, Dravasp Meherji, Jamshed Madan, Jamsheed Daver, Khushrav Daver, Rasheed Jeejeebhoy, Sanju Dutta, Sheryar Katrak (c)). Neither team has started the tournament particularly well, drawing one and losing one of their two games. Wake up, guys!!

The tournament also features a daily bumper canteen, featuring Parsee and other delicacies, and other stalls as well.

As with any event of this scale, we require to call on the services of a large number of volunteers, and while that list is too long to replicate here, we thank each of them for their selfless dedication.

The tournament is now at its halfway point as we go to press. Stay tuned for a full report within the next fortnight.
