CPC Q1 Sports Report

The January – March period is always a busy one at Calcutta Parsee Club, with Athletics, Badminton, Cricket, Tennis, Hockey and Football on the Sporting front, and a variety of events on the Social calendar.
Reports on the Food Festival & Children’s Party, Navroze Celebrations, Annual Athletic Meet and 5-a-side Football Tournament are separately carried on gavashni.com. Here are the remaining highlights of the quarter.
We launched the quarter with intra-club Hockey and Basketball on 9th January. The matches were fun, yet competitive and the winners received cabbages (yes, you read that right) for their troubles. This was followed by a pot-luck dinner, something that became an enjoyably regular feature as the quarter went on.
The Tin and Bottle Tennis tournament was held on 23rd January. We only had twelve participants since it was a working day for many, so we played this in a ‘team’ format, much like the recently launched ITPL. It was a fun day in the sun, and the team captained by Rayzad Bulsara eventually prevailed.
The Tennis Open Singles tournament was held on 8th March, just prior to the commencement of the 5-a-side Football tournament. Rayzad won, yet again, defeating Jahan Mehta in the final.
The Hockey league season commenced in early February, and as has been a recent trend, concluded before the end of March, implying a fairly hectic schedule of 14 matches in 5-6 weeks. The Club avoided relegation (just about) once more, and although a final rank of 13 out of 15 teams does not indicate a great season, the team put up a fairly decent performance in all but two matches.
Noomi Mehta, Khurshed Bulsara, Sheryar Katrak, Rayomand Subawalla, ArdeshirJeejeebhoy (domestic import), Ratan Postwalla, Rayzad Bulsara (also top scorer), Jahan Mehta, Rasheed Jeejeebhoy, KaizadDandiwala (international import), Ramin Balsara and Jamshed Madan all played their part, as did our invaluable non-member players Alan Bell, AnujKichlu, Eric Guest, Avijit Roy, Basant Roy and Ajit Singh.
It’s all Football now. More on that soon.
